Rickshaw drivers are vital to last-mile connectivity in Indian cities. Yet most of them don’t own their vehicles and spend years paying daily rent just to keep working. Despite their hard work, financial stability and ownership often remain out of reach.

This is the challenge SMV Green Solutions, founded in 2015 in Varanasi, set out to solve. The social enterprise is working to make transportation more sustainable while giving drivers the chance to own their vehicles. By promoting electric mobility and offering financial support, SMV Green Solutions helps drivers build assets instead of paying endless rentals.

Founder and Background

SMV Green Solutions was founded by Naveen Krishna, a social entrepreneur passionate about community development and inclusive growth.

Before starting the company, Naveen worked with India’s Ministry of Rural Development, where he interacted closely with underserved communities. He saw firsthand the struggles of informal workers like rickshaw drivers and realized how structural issues kept them from improving their financial conditions. These experiences inspired him to create a solution that combined economic empowerment with sustainable mobility.

The Super Founder Journey

The spark for SMV Green Solutions came from a simple but powerful observation: rickshaw drivers spent years renting vehicles, paying daily fees, yet never owning anything. Naveen realized this wasn’t just a transport issue—it was a financial inclusion challenge.

At the same time, electric mobility was beginning to gain traction in India. Electric rickshaws offered lower operating costs, but the high upfront purchase price kept drivers from adopting them. Naveen designed a model that combined affordable financing, training, and operational support, allowing drivers to buy e-rickshaws in manageable installments and eventually become full owners.

The journey was far from easy. Infrastructure for electric mobility was limited, and convincing drivers to trust a new system required patience and persistence. But Naveen’s commitment to both sustainability and empowerment helped him gradually build a network of drivers, partners, and supporters.

Today, SMV Green Solutions stands as a powerful example of how entrepreneurship can drive social transformation and environmental progress at the same time.

Business Model and Services

SMV Green Solutions offers a complete ecosystem to make electric mobility accessible:

  • Affordable financing with flexible installment plans.
  • Battery charging and swapping support.
  • Insurance coverage for drivers and vehicles.
  • Help with registration and documentation.
  • Training programs for drivers.

This integrated approach helps drivers move from renting to owning, improving both their income stability and long-term financial security.

Social and Environmental Impact

By enabling drivers to switch to electric vehicles, SMV Green Solutions reduces fuel costs and lowers carbon emissions. At the same time, drivers earn more and build long-term assets.

This dual impact—clean mobility and economic empowerment—is at the heart of the company’s mission.

Women Empowerment Initiative – Vahini

One of SMV Green Solutions’ most inspiring programs is Vahini, which empowers women to become e-rickshaw drivers and micro-entrepreneurs.

Through Vahini, women receive training, financial support, and safety measures that encourage them to enter the mobility sector. The program not only creates livelihoods but also challenges traditional gender barriers in transportation.

Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, SMV Green Solutions plans to expand its electric mobility ecosystem across more Indian cities. The vision is a future where transportation is cleaner, more affordable, and more inclusive—helping thousands of drivers achieve financial independence.

Through innovation, sustainability, and community-focused solutions, SMV Green Solutions is redefining what mobility means for India’s urban workforce.
