Founded by Shakti Yadav, Buy Food with Plastic® India is a Mumbai-based initiative that tackles two urgent challenges at once: plastic pollution and hunger. Through community events, locals can pay for meals with plastic bottles, creating a unique exchange that reduces waste while providing food security.

The mission is simple yet powerful: to create hope where it’s hard to find. By organizing Plastic for Meal Events, the initiative unites communities, reduces environmental pollution, and provides warm meals to those in need. Every bottle collected is recycled, ensuring that plastic is kept out of landfills and waterways.

Partnerships strengthen the impact. Collaborating with Bisleri’s “Bottles for Change” program, Buy Food with Plastic India transforms collected plastic into valuable products for local communities, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production.

In 2026, the initiative is scaling its efforts across Mumbai with ambitious goals: 8 Plastic for Meal Events, 96 Awareness Sessions across 24 schools, and 50 Collection Points. These programs combine education, action, and recycling to create long-term change.

Plastic for Meal Events bring communities together. Participants exchange collected plastic for freshly prepared meals, addressing hunger while contributing to a cleaner environment. It’s not charity — it’s empowerment through participation.

Awareness Sessions in schools are equally vital. By reaching up to 200 students per session, Buy Food with Plastic India teaches children about plastic pollution, recycling, and sustainable habits. Collection Points in schools then give students a way to act on what they’ve learned, turning awareness into daily responsibility.

The Plastic for Income program expands the impact further. Across 8 communities in Mumbai — including Colaba, Dharavi, Govandi, and Tata Nagar — locals can exchange plastic for money or essentials like rice, cooking oil, and notebooks. This creates tangible value from waste while encouraging cleaner neighborhoods.

Looking ahead, Buy Food with Plastic India is building a movement that connects environmental education, community action, and recycling. By turning plastic into meals, income, and awareness, the initiative is proving that waste can be transformed into opportunity, dignity, and hope.
