Sometimes the biggest innovations come from the most ordinary objects. For Rahul Agarwal, that object was a spoon. What began as a design challenge eventually became Polygons Design, a company he founded in 2016 that has now captured international attention after a successful appearance on Shark Tank USA. A decade after starting his entrepreneurial journey, Agarwal is proving that even the simplest household items can be completely reimagined.
The idea dates back to 2014 when Agarwal was a student at the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad. A senior reportedly told him that the spoon had already reached its final form and could not be redesigned. Instead of accepting the statement, he treated it as a challenge. Within a few days, he developed the core concept of a flat sheet that could fold into different measuring sizes. What seemed like a simple idea would take years of refinement before becoming a market-ready product.
In October 2016, Agarwal officially founded Polygons Design, turning his design experiment into a business. His vision was to simplify kitchen tools while maintaining precision and functionality. Rather than offering another traditional measuring spoon set, he created a product that could save space, reduce clutter, and provide multiple measurements using just two tools.
The result was Polygons, an origami-inspired foldable measuring spoon set. Instead of six different measuring spoons, users only need two flat tools that can fold into multiple sizes. The larger spoon measures half a tablespoon, one tablespoon, and two tablespoons, while the smaller version measures a quarter teaspoon, half teaspoon, and one teaspoon. At only 2.8 millimetres thick when flattened, the design is compact, practical, and easy to store.
What makes the story even more remarkable is the recognition the product has received. The foldable measuring spoon has won more than 20 international design awards, validating Agarwal’s belief that even everyday products can be improved through thoughtful design. The invention demonstrated how creativity and persistence can transform a common kitchen tool into a globally recognized product.
The company’s biggest breakthrough came when Agarwal appeared on Shark Tank USA. His confident pitch, combined with the product’s practical design, impressed the investors. Guest Shark Mindy Kaling described the product as “really ingenious” and highly useful, while investor Lori Greiner immediately saw its commercial potential.
The pitch resulted in a $350,000 investment deal from Lori Greiner and Mindy Kaling. Agarwal accepted the offer for 8% equity plus 2% advisory shares, valuing the company at approximately $3.5 million. Beyond the investment itself, the appearance brought massive visibility to the brand, introducing Polygons to millions of viewers across the United States and around the world.
Today, ten years after launching Polygons Design in 2016, Rahul Agarwal’s journey stands as an inspiring example of how persistence and creative thinking can lead to global recognition. From a college challenge to a successful Shark Tank deal, he has shown that innovation does not always require complex technology. Sometimes, all it takes is looking at an everyday object differently and having the determination to bring that idea to life.
