Founded in 2013 by designers Malika Budhiraj and Surkhi Matharu, Baarique is devoted to crafting exquisite hand-painted objects that enhance the timeless character of brass and bronze. Each creation is a collaboration with artisans, breathing new life into tradition and translating heritage into a contemporary cultural expression.

A predominantly women-led studio, Baarique operates through mentorship and collaborative authorship. Under Malika’s leadership, young women are trained in painting and design, contributing directly to the conceptual and visual development of each collection. This approach not only sustains craft traditions but also empowers women to become active voices in design innovation.

Guided by principles of slow design and cultural continuity, Baarique creates functional and spatial objects that engage with craft as both practice and evolving language. Every piece is designed to be more than an object — it is a dialogue between heritage and modernity, between memory and material.

Founder Malika Budhiraj, a multidisciplinary artist and designer, draws inspiration from memory, ritual, and the quiet codes of Indian material culture. Her practice is shaped by ancestral homes, inherited objects, and the tactile presence of handwork. Through empathy and ethical awareness, she translates emotional and cultural memory into contemporary forms that resonate globally.

Malika’s approach is deeply personal yet universal. Guided by a commitment to mindful, vegan living, she brings discipline and repetition — an athlete’s mindset — to her design practice. For her, design evolves through rigor, empathy, and ethical awareness, making Baarique’s creations both timeless and socially conscious.

Today, Baarique stands as a symbol of cultural storytelling through craft. By blending heritage with contemporary design, and empowering women artisans, the studio is shaping a new narrative for Indian craftsmanship — one that honors tradition while embracing innovation.
