Suta, founded by sisters Sujata Biswas and Taniya Biswas, is a fashion brand that has redefined the saree market in India by bringing back the charm of plain mulmul sarees. What started in 2016 with just ₹6 lakh in savings and two weavers has grown into a ₹90 crore bootstrapped brand with over 17,000 artisans across India and 19 stores nationwide.

Suta is not just about fabrics — it’s about stories, dignity, and impact. Every saree carries a unique name and fictional backstory, and the brand’s loyal customers proudly call themselves “Suta Queens.”

The Founders

  • Sujata Biswas (Su) – Alumna of CET Bhubaneswar and IIFT Delhi, Su worked in the steel industry with Essar and Jindal before pursuing a PhD at IIT Bombay. A TEDx speaker and Forbes India W-Power Trailblazer, she is the big-picture thinker who transforms ideas into institutions. Su balances her entrepreneurial journey with motherhood, her love for plants, and her belief that stories shape markets.
  • Taniya Biswas (Ta) – An engineer from NIT Rourkela and MBA graduate from IIM Lucknow, Ta worked at IBM and Tata Refractories before finding her calling in building a brand where people come first. A TEDx speaker and entrepreneur, she is the heartbeat of Suta, ensuring artisans feel respected, employees feel valued, and customers feel at home. Her philosophy: “Doing good is contagious.”

Together, Su and Ta are not just sisters but co-conspirators of a movement — one brings structure, the other brings soul.

Philosophy & Mission

Suta’s philosophy is rooted in mindfulness, honesty, and impact.

  • Mindful Fashion: Every choice — from sourcing to design — is made with care and respect for artisans.
  • Impact Over Profit: The brand prioritizes dignity and livelihoods over numbers.
  • Cultural Comeback: Reviving the “forgotten saree” by making mulmul fashionable again.
  • Community: Building a loyal tribe of “Suta Queens” who celebrate craft and connection.

Step Inside: The World of Suta

Suta stores are more than retail spaces — they are storytelling sanctuaries. With murals, textures, and intimate corners, each store feels like home. Customers don’t just shop; they wander through stories, linger over fabrics, and feel the heartbeat of thousands of artisans woven into every weave.

Through “The Suta Corner,” the brand also opens its doors to like-minded makers, giving artisans and designers a stage to showcase their work.

Stores are present in Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Gurugram, Raipur, Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Thane, Kochi, and Trivandrum.

Impact & Vision

  • For Artisans: Dignity, fair wages, and recognition.
