Physics Wallah (PW), founded in 2016 by Alakh Pandey, has grown from a humble YouTube channel into one of India’s most influential edtech platforms. In 2025, the company is preparing for a landmark ₹3,820 crore Initial Public Offering (IPO), signaling its transition from startup success to public market contender. Despite recent controversies, PW remains a dominant force in online education, especially in test prep for engineering and medical aspirants.

📚 Origins and Growth Trajectory

Physics Wallah began with Alakh Pandey’s engaging physics lectures on YouTube, which quickly gained traction for their clarity, affordability, and relatability. By 2020, PW launched its own app and website, offering structured courses for JEE, NEET, UPSC, SSC, and other competitive exams.

As of 2025, PW has:

  • Over 10 million registered learners
  • A valuation of $3.7 billion, backed by WestBridge Capital and Hornbill Capital
  • Raised $312 million in funding across Series B rounds

Its hybrid model—combining online classes, offline centers, and affordable pricing—has made it a favorite among Tier 2 and Tier 3 students.

📈 IPO and Financial Strategy

PW’s upcoming IPO, approved by SEBI, is expected to raise ₹3,820 crore through a mix of new share issuance and secondary sales. The funds will be used to:

  • Expand offline centers across India
  • Invest in AI-driven learning tools
  • Enhance faculty training and content quality
  • Explore international markets

This move positions PW alongside giants like BYJU’S and Vedantu, but with a sharper focus on affordability and vernacular reach.

⚠️ Controversies and Restructuring

In the lead-up to its IPO, PW faced criticism over alleged “silent terminations” of faculty members. Reports suggest:

  • Faculty attrition rose from 18% in FY23 to 40.4% in FY24, before moderating to 26% in FY25
  • Several former employees claimed abrupt dismissals without due process

While PW attributes the restructuring to quality control and strategic realignment, the backlash has sparked debate about transparency and employee welfare in edtech startups.

🔮 What’s Next?

Physics Wallah is expected to:

  • Launch new verticals in K-12, upskilling, and government exam prep
  • Expand its offline presence in underserved regions
  • Integrate AI tutors and adaptive learning modules
  • Strengthen its social impact programs for low-income learners
